Intervention 9/10: Diana struggled with her adoption, felt a lack of affection from her mom, and losing her father and marriage in the same year pushed her over the edge of addiction

Diana’s kids recalled their mom being very much a great mom. Diana admitted she loved to get hi on Meth and then mix in heavy drinking. She has been addicted to crystal Meth for 4 years. We then saw some graphic scenes with Diana smoking meth, taking pills, and chugging wine. Diana compared taking drugs to having an orgasm. Diana’s sons know their mom trades sex for money and alcohol. We heard her negotiating sex for $20. Diana has been arrested for DUIs and drug possession. Diana has been found on the streets passed out. One time she was found lying in the street with signs she had been raped.

We then got Diana’s background. She was known to have a ton of energy as a kid and was nicknamed “dynamite” by her grandfather. Diana was very close to her dad, but she did not have the mother-daughter relationship she wanted. Diana’s mom was not emotionally supportive and did not show affection. The big bombshell of the show was that at age 9, Diana’s parents told her that she was adopted. Diana took the news very hard and she felt abandoned by her biological mother. The rejection from her birth mother and the distant relationship with her adopting mother pushed her to start drinking at a young age.

Diana had her first child Kellie at the age of 19. She then had two sons Zach and Kody over the next several years. She vowed to be a great mother. Diana’s life centered on her kids and she tried to show them the love she never felt from her moms. Diana was very beautiful in her early pictures with her kids. Diana went looking for her birth mother and got a very abrupt, harsh message for Diana. Diana’s biological mother said she gave her up then and didn’t want anything to do with her. Shortly after Diana started taking Vicodin. The pill problem got so bad that Diana husband divorced her and took the kids. Diana’s father died the same year she was divorced. Her father’s death pushed her over the edge to become a full-blown addict/alcoholic.

Diana admitted to being in the homeless community and embracing it. She feels like she is not a daughter, a mother, nor a wife. Without any labels to identify herself with, Diana has embraced her childhood name of “dynamite” while she struggles on the streets. Diana’s biological mother Janet threw her out of the house because of the drugs. Diana hates Janet and there is such tension between them. Janet does not show any emotion and often refused to hug Diana. Janet has washed her hands of any responsibility or care for Diana.

Diana has a street boyfriend named Billy. She described him as the “pretty boy of the homeless community”. Diana’s kids hate Billy and the idea of their mom clinging to a guy for affection she always wanted. Billy snapped at Diana for “breaking his heart” by turning a trick for some crystal meth. I guess he thought she was going to steal it or trade some housework for it. Billy and Diana have gotten into physical altercations and she said she deserved it.

Her son Zach pleaded with his mom to get help. He felt like he was her father and not her son. He has supported her and enabled her addiction. Zach hates Billy and everyone is scared that he will kill Billy if he sees him around his mom. Billy showed up as Zach was leaving and Zach flipped out. Billy claimed he was not Billy, but Zach wanted to see his arm for a tattoo, so he could identify him. Diana pleaded with Zach to calm down.

The intervention therapist tried to talk to Janet, but Janet was not very open to helping too much. Dian prepared for her “final interview”, but she in fact was going to the intervention. She had a beer n her hand as she walked into the room. She let out a big sigh and an “oh lord”.  Kellie went first reading her letter. Then, Kody read their letters and they had a very difficult time fighting back the tears. They all had to tell their mom that they would be cutting her off completely if she didn’t take the help. The therapist was also adopted and she tried to relate to Diana. Janet read her letter and it was more of a checklist of how bad a person she thought her daughter was. The letter was the worst one ever written on the show. Diana’s son Zach was last to read his letter and it seemed to really pull in her heartstrings.

Diana agreed to get help at the intervention. Her kids all embraced her and broke down crying and Diana even got a hug from her mom Janet. Diana got in a van and headed for a rehab center that specialized in addiction and adoption issues. She was very thrilled that her family cared so much.  While in treatment, Diana was diagnosed as bi-polar and she was transferred to a different treatment facility. She left rehab after completing the 3-month program and her therapist seemed very optimistic that she could stay clean. Diana returned home to her children picking her up from the airport. Diana looked great and said she felt fabulous after being 70 days sober. Janet visited Diana and they embraced in a big hug. Janet was proud of her daughter and said she still loved her.

Diana from Intervention 9/10UPDATE: Diana has been sober since February 2012.

  5. Diana I wish you could know how much your story impacted me – you are a beautiful spirit with a lot of love to offer and show this world. This is best exemplified in your amazing children. You are a true survivor, a true example of perseverance. You show the world that though you were dealt a really tough hand in life, there is a silver lining. As a person who as a child wasn’t scooped up and held in loving embraces, or told by my parents they love me, I know how hard it can be to make sense of how to interprete love then act. Acceptance is hard and self acceptance is a true challenge. You have overcome and your story really opened my heart. Thank you and good luck.
